Work attire has always been something I hated shopping for. When I was in college and needed to dress business casual for class presentations, I would pull out my trusty pair of blue trousers and black bodysuit because that was the only outfit I had. Once I got my first big girl job, the idea of having a wardrobe full of these types of clothes gave me a visceral reaction. I remember shopping with one of my friends to find clothes for it, and I literally broke out in hives. But I’ve realized there is nothing to be scared of when dressing business casual. There’s no need to dress like a grandma for your 9-5 and hate all the clothes in your closet. You can dress it up or dress it down, but there are actually so many versatile options to include in your work wardrobe.
The first staple is the top. Growing up, I always thought everyone wore a button-up blouse to work every day. While this is still an option, there are so many basics to keep in your closet in lieu of that. Solid-color bodysuits are my favorite because they can be worn both in and out of work. They also give the look that your top is tucked in without it bunching up. There are long-sleeve and short-sleeve options in hundreds of different styles and colors. Depending on the weather, you can choose which best suits you. Another perk of the bodysuit is that they are thin enough that they are perfect for layering. If you want to wear a blazer, jacket, or cardigan, they will fit perfectly without making you feel restricted.

In the colder months, the easiest options to go with are an oversized sweater or a turtleneck. Pairing any sweater with a pair of pants makes an outfit look professional while also being comfortable. The best thing about a sweater is that it not only keeps you warm but there are so many colors and prints to choose from, you can really have fun with your outfit. Sweaters are the one part of my professional wardrobe that are not solely solid color basics. A striped sweater is a wardrobe essential, and there are so many affordable and luxurious brands, depending on your budget.
Next would be the bottoms. It’s crucial to find the style of pants that is most flattering to you. Between slim flit and wide leg, and depending on the rise of the pants, it’s all about personal preference. Once you decide what style is perfect for you, I recommend getting them in as many solid colors as you can. Personally, my favorite style is the mid-rise wide leg, maybe because I prefer the same style of jeans. Having trousers that are solid colors gives you the option to rotate them with as many tops as you want because they will match anything. If you work somewhere that is more casual, you can also opt for a pair of jeans. However, I would recommend getting a sleek pair of cream-colored jeans because they dress up your outfit while still looking professional.

As it gets warmer, you may want to wear a skirt or a dress to work instead. Thankfully, maxi skirts are in style right now. Again, solid colors are the best way to go. As summer is approaching, the most trendy option is to go with a silk maxi skirt. They are not as heavy as cotton, but they are so versatile and dress up your outfit. Again, you can wear this piece not only to work but also out to dinner and truly get your money’s worth out of it.
The final step in completing the perfect business casual outfit is to find the perfect pair of shoes. I remember thinking every woman wore high heels to work every day, but that is usually never the case. My go-to pair of shoes is a pair of black boots. They match EVERYTHING and, once again, can be worn both in and out of the office. Ninety percent of the time, I wear my bar boots to work because they are that comfortable and match every outfit. I would also recommend a pair of loafers or black slip-on flat shoes, especially as it’s getting warmer out.

The most important thing to remember is that you can ultimately wear whatever you want. Being comfortable can make or break your workday. You’re wearing this outfit for eight hours of the day, and while they may not be your favorite pieces, there’s a way to love every item in your closet. And, the best part is, you probably already have most of these things to build the perfect business casual outfit!
