As the year progresses, it is inevitably going to be getting colder, especially here in Upstate New York. In a place where there are really hot summers and really cold winters, it may seem like you need two completely different wardrobes, but what do you wear during the in-between months, during the time when it’s freezing in the morning and then it hits 80 degrees by the afternoon? Or, as it’s getting colder, what clothes should get put into storage, and what clothes can you keep in your closet as a year-round staple? It’s not about buying brand-new items for every season but about having the pieces necessary to complete your essential fall wardrobe.
In my opinion, the most important thing about a fall wardrobe is the concept of layering. There are days when it’s chilly in the morning and then hot by the afternoon, you have to be easily adaptable. I always think that a leather or denim jacket is the best way to go. They are so versatile and come in so many styles. Depending on your personal preference, there are fitted, cropped, and oversized options of all three, and if you are on a budget, it is easy to find them second-hand. My favorite denim jacket is one that I bought for 25 cents at a thrift store in North Carolina, so the options are truly endless on where to find them and what your budget is.
Another fall essential that is trending right now is animal print. Referencing back to the mob wife aesthetic we saw earlier this year, leopard print has been reintroduced as a closet staple. Because of the neutral tones of animal print, it is easy to match the pieces to most things. Plus, the colors and textures are perfect for the fall season. Whether it’s warm or cold outside, you can pair an animal print top with a pair of jeans, leather pants, mini skirt, or cargo pants. The list really does go on. And, once again, you can add a jacket to layer.

As for shoes during the fall season, it’s time to break out the UGGS! Not really, but almost. While you can obviously wear your summer sneakers in the fall months, different styles of boots can also be reintroduced into your wardrobe. I think everyone should have a short and tall pair of black leather boots at their disposal. You can, once again, get them at an array of price points, and they match so many outfits. I bought my favorite tall pair of leather boots for $10 at an estate sale years ago. While this is not always a viable option (especially for those of us with gigantic feet) there is always a way to find some second-hand if that is the route you want to pursue. As for short boots, I have two staple pairs. They’re very similar. One pair just has more of a heel than the other. I don’t usually opt for the ones with a heel because I am already so tall, but they are definitely more flattering. It’s easy to wear short boots with jeans and long pants, whereas a pair of tall boots is better suited for skirts and dresses.
Something to keep in mind when transitioning your wardrobe from summer into fall is that the weather will not make up its mind from day to day. It will be 80 degrees out for a few days, and then all of a sudden, it’s freezing and raining, so you have to be prepared for all of that. Obviously, it’s easy to track the weather daily, but trying to decide what clothes to begin putting into storage can prove to be difficult this time of year. But there’s no need to buy all new clothing for every season! Everyone has a semblance of fall tones mixed into their closet, and it’s easy to incorporate them into your wardrobe throughout the year!
