With the Barbie movie recently coming out and breaking records, it is no shock the impact it has had on current pop culture trends. Every year, there are main trends that come to the forefront and are translated through that year’s Halloween, and this year is no different. The number of Barbie’s that you can dress up as are endless and while it has always been a popular costume, this year I see there being a wave of pink on October 31st.
As someone who dressed up as Barbie for Halloween last year, I cannot stress how easy it is to come up with a Barbie costume. While you can plan this costume out to a tee and be meticulous in it, it is also an easy last-minute idea. Whether you want to go all out and be a limited edition Barbie or you just have a pink dress sitting in the back of your closet, the opportunities are endless. Personally, I wanted to go for a dress that I felt I could re-wear and it was not specific to that one Halloween. I got a pink halter dress from Target which I had worn to the bar already over the summer so I knew I was getting my money’s worth. With that, I got bedazzled oversized pink sunglasses and printed a Barbie logo in my school’s computer lab. Coupled with my frat shoes, I was ready to go out. Because I was going to frats, I am glad that I picked a dress that I did not care if I got spilled on or anything, which is good because someone did spill down the back of it that night. For college Halloween, I would highly recommend that whatever you are dressing up as, just know it is going to be crowded and dirty and you should not wear clothes that you care too much about.
Since Barbie can do anything, you can legitimately wear any pink outfit you want and attach a Barbie logo. Some of my favorites that I have seen are Workout Barbie, Malibu Barbie, Western Barbie, and Space Barbie. While you do not have to attach a Barbie logo to your outfit of choice, it can be an option if you opt for a basic Barbie. The key to having the best Barbie costume is to ensure that all of the pieces look like a plastic doll would wear them. After seeing the Barbie movie it is most likely easier to figure out a costume as I foresee many people attempting to recreate Margot Robbie’s Western Barbie look. While that is a viable option and I do think it will be the most popular this year, there are so many other things Barbie does that you can dress up as.
If you want to be Malibu Barbie all you really need is a pink bikini, a pink mini skirt to cover up the bikini bottoms, and a pair of pink sunglasses. For this one, I would probably include a Barbie logo but also if you are blonde I do not think it’s necessary. The same idea goes for any Barbie costume. I’ve seen so many variations of workout Barbie and the closest idea is Margot Robbie’s leotard outfit in the movie. The key is to look like you’re from a 1980s infomercial. Again, pink is the color of choice here and all you need is a leotard, tights, and sweatbands. For your hair, use a scrunchie and do any type of updo.
I definitely think this will be a popular costume and we will be seeing a lot of pink on October 31st. C’mon Barbie, let's go party!
