Your fashion guide for these winter months regardless of where you are!
Regardless of where you are located and what the weather is in your hometown, everyone wants to be in the holiday spirit this season. While it may be impossible to wear a giant coat in those warm climates where you don’t get snow on the ground, there are still many ways to dress to impress throughout the rest of the season. Whether you’re going to see the holiday lights, going ice skating, family dinner, or going to the local bar with your high school friends, there is something for everyone. This is basically a deep dive into my Pinterest boards because I wish I could dress like the girls on there.
For those living in mid-temp to cold temp climates, I feel your pain. Living in upstate New York and never having spent a winter away from home, I am a pro at dressing for the cold weather but still trying to look cute. There are so many different ways to dress up or dress down an outfit in this weather. The first and most prevalent trend I’ve seen cycling the internet lately is earmuffs. White earmuffs have become a staple in the ‘it girl’s’ wardrobe and can be paired with any outfit. While they are functional at keeping your ears warm in the cold, they are also so cute and can make any outfit look chic. They definitely follow the over-the-ear headphone trend that we saw emerge over the summer when Apple released the Airpods Max.
Another staple for the winter months is an array of leather pieces in your wardrobe. Whether it be an oversized leather jacket (mine is insulated, perfect for this weather), a leather mini skirt, or even leather pants. Leather is warm and classy and does a good job at making outfits look expensive. A leather jacket paired with any outfit is enough to keep you warm as well as add that extra spice needed to what may be a casual outfit of baggy jeans and a white tee. It gives it that winter vibe without needing to be an actual puffer coat. The leather mini skirt or leather pants can be worn on any night out whether it be the bar or even can be dressed down for a family holiday dinner. Pair either of these with a chunky knit sweater and a pair of boots and you’re ready for any event happening in these winter months.
The final thing that should be a staple in your wardrobe, especially if you’re in a colder climate, are a pair of translucent black tights. My favorite pair of black stockings can be found at H&M. They are super affordable and do not get runs in them. (Special tip to avoid runs in your tights: once you put them on, spray them with hairspray and boom! Zero runs. If you do happen to get a run in your stockings, take some clear nail polish and apply it around the run, this will stop it from spreading.) These stockings can be worn under any skirt and are perfect for family dinners especially. If your extended family is anything like mine and makes comments about the short length of your attire, wearing a pair of stockings immediately solves this issue.
If you’re not in a cold climate but still want to feel like you’re in the holiday spirit through your outfits then the color scheme is crucial. Of course you can still wear the pieces I previously mentioned but by incorporating colors such as black, white, cream, beige, navy, dark green, and potentially red (especially maroon or wine tones), will definitely make you feel in the holiday spirit. These are the most wintery colors and by combining them with some if not all of the staple pieces mentioned above, you can also participate in the winter season even without the cold weather.
