We are in the midst of Coachella season, and like in years past, everyone is analyzing the latest trends being worn to the festival. Looking at your favorite celebrities and influencers is nothing new when it comes to Coachella style, and this year is no different. What is different are the styles that are being introduced at the music festival. In years past, the fashion presented at Coachella set up the trends for the coming summer. In 2015, it was the year of the Bohemian trends, and 2019 prompted the re-emergence of Y2K in the fashion world. But what did the 2024 Coachella bring to the table? From Western style to comfort and casual, this year’s Coachella looks to be just as influential as in the past.
The emergence of Western trends gaining popularity can be attributed to Beyonce’s release of Cowboy Carter. So many artists have been intersecting country and pop music recently, and the fashion trends exemplify it. While the “Coastal Cowgirl” aesthetic appeared last year, it has remained popular and grown into so much more. So many people opted to wear cowboy hats and boots this year but with a twist. Rather than going for stereotypical Western wear, many have decided to pair the accessories with pieces in textiles such as leather, giving it a grungier feel. Or they dress it up using sparkly pieces, making the outfit the main focus rather than the accessories worn with it.
One of the most influential people in my age group is Alix Earle. Her outfits from the first weekend of Coachella embody the trends that were seen throughout the festival by others. Her day-one look included a pair of black cowboy boots with leather shorts, a plain white crop top, and a leather jacket. The intersection of different trends is something that has popped up in Coachella fashion this year. Along with that, her day-three outfit focused more on the comfy and casual style that has popped up. She wore oversized denim shorts with a graphic baby tee. Graphic baby tees are also a trend that re-introduced itself with the Y2K resurgence in years past, so her pairing it with a unique pair of blue denim shorts re-establishes the influence that casual styles have had on Coachella this year.

As previously mentioned, a trend that has been seen at Coachella this year is the casual and comfortable style. So many people opted for denim and basic pieces rather than the extravagant outfits we have seen in the past. The first person that comes to mind is James Charles. In years before, he wore the most out-there outfits, assless chaps and all. But, this year, his outfits were more toned down. Including multiple full-denim outfits, it is clear that he’s opted for a more comfortable style this year. Along with celebrities like Taylor Swift and Paris Hilton, turning down the “extra-ness” of their Coachella outfits has become a theme this year.

After diving into what influencers and celebrities wore to the music festival, what does this mean for the summer fashion trends of 2024? I think every single trend we saw at Coachella is going to carry over in some capacity. Obviously, these celebrities and influencers are wearing designer and more expensive pieces. That said, so many of the trending stores will most likely begin to sell similar items for a lower price.
Keeping up with the trends for the summer is something that so many people strive to do, and since these specific trends are not super eclectic, it will be easier to do so. From full denim outfits to a graphic baby tee paired with jeans, there really is a way to recreate these looks for everyone on a budget. There were a lot of sheer and cut-out pieces as well which will also be a trend to look out for in the summer of 2024.
